January 1 KRON-TV (channel 4) in San Francisco ends its 52-year affiliation with NBC and becomes independent after Young Broadcasting, who purchased the station more than a year earlier from the deYoung family (who also sold the San Francisco Chronicle to Hearst Corporation), earlier declines to adhere to demands made by NBC to run the station under the conventions of an NBC-owned station (e.g., rebranding as "NBC 4", and running the entire network schedule in pattern with no pre-emptions except for news emergencies). ABC affiliate KNTV (channel 11) in San Jose assumed the affiliation and was shortly after, purchased by NBC. KRON would not carry NBC programming until April 2010, when it began to carry shows preempted by KNTV due to news emergencies and local events.
January 14 The secondary Univision Spanish-language television network, TeleFutura is debuted on some stations.
February 3 Super Commercials: A Mental Engineering Special airs on PBS stations reaching 85% of the U.S. after Super Bowl XXXVI; reportedly the best coverage yet achieved by a former public-access television program.
March 10 CBS airs it's first commercial-free 9/11 documentary TV film.
March 17 WrestleMania X8 invades the Toronto's Skydome when 68,227 fans see WrestleMania X8 which was headlined by The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan.
March 19 YES Network is launched in New York City and the rest of the Tri-state New York area.
April 1 The N, a digital cable and satellite channel aimed at teenagers, launches and shares the channel space of Noggin. The N would later split from Noggin on New Year's Eve 2007, and be renamed TeenNick in September 2009.
April 17 General Hospital airs its milestone 10,000th episode.
April 24 G4 began broadcasting, this was noted 2 years later before TechTV merges into G4TechTV.
May One Life to Live airs a full week of episodes broadcast live from the ABC New York studios.
May 1 Nicktoons Network (renamed Nicktoons in 2009) launched in the United States.
All of these MTV themed channels is also being launched as well as the VH1 sister network, VH1 Country (now known as CMT Pure Country)
May 6 WWF RAW becomes WWE RAW following a name change from World Wrestling Federation to World Wrestling Entertainment earlier in day.
May 12 CNN Sports Illustrated ceased operations. and it was been replaced by NBA TV on some cable systems. this leads us to continue with Sports Illustrated, a magazine owned by Time Warner, is current.
May 13 TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time is presented on ABC.
May 19 The X-Files airs it's 2-hour final episode.
June 1 The very first HD cable channel, Discovery HD Theater (now known as HD Theater) is launched.
June 3 Sailor Moon returns to Cartoon Network at 3:30pm EST/PST after a year of the network not showing the program.
June 7 Kim Possible has its first three episodes aired on Disney Channel.
June 12 The NBC airs its last NBA game after 12 years with the league.
June 16 The Dead Zone premieres on USA Network. It was the highest-rated cable series debut in television history.
July 5 Cartoon Network stops airing the popular anime Sailor Moon, this is the last time the network or any other network in the US has aired the series.
July 13 Fox News Channel overtakes CNN as the #1 cable TV news service in the US.
July 15 After negotiations over a new affiliation agreement with CBS collapsed, WJXT (channel 4) in Jacksonville, Florida became an independent station on this date, with former UPN affiliate WTEV (channel 47) assuming the market's CBS affiliation.
August 21 Fine Living Network is launched in United States.
September 4 Kelly Clarkson wins the first season of American Idol.
September 14 Fox Kids, then owned by ABC Family, leaves Fox and is replaced by the Fox Box (now known as 4Kids TV), also on ABC, One Saturday Morning was relaunched known as ABC Kids.
Cartoon Network shows Sailor Moon SuperS – The Movie: Black Dream Hole again, this is the last time Sailor Moon was featured in the United States, until 2009.
September 22 The 54th Primetime Emmy Awards are handed out.
September 25 Lisa Donahue is crowned the winner of Big Brother 3 and wins the $500,000 prize. Runner-Up Danielle Reyes wins $50,000.
September 30 American Movie Classics is changing a format to a commercial general movie channel, and it was simply known as AMC.
The ill-fated news network, All News Channel ceased broadcasting.
October 1 Cartoon Network celebrates its 10th Anniversary, airing with a 16-hour marathon of Looney Tunes.
October 5 The programming strand Discovery Kids on NBC launches on NBC.
October 17 The following stations were founded in Guam: K28HS, K30HB, K32GB, and K36GJ.
October 30 Warren Zevon is featured on the Late Show with David Letterman as the only guest for the entire hour. Zevon performs several songs and talks in length about being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.
Longtime castmember Hunter Tylo's character, Dr. Taylor Hamilton Forrester, is killed off the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, which is seen worldwide. Taylor would later return from the dead in 2005.
December Talk show host David Letterman, Paul Shaffer and a stage hand from the Late Show with David Letterman, Biff Henderson, spend Christmas in Afghanistan with the United States and international military forces stationed in the country.
December 15 Animation for The Simpsons changes from cel animation to digital ink and paint.
